Strengthening Community Through Culture and Place is the heart of Big Creative Consulting. It’s our” tagline”, yes—but it’s also at the throughline of both of our lives and work.

Big Creative is a new venture, but the work is not new. For decades, together and individually, we have been seeking to strengthen community: through arts, through placemaking, through downtown leadership, through events that bring people into the streets. We have seen this work change lives and change cities. Now with Big Creative Consulting we are creating a resource and a network to support others to do the same.

The words in our tagline aren’t accidental. Each carries weight. Together they describe not just what we do, but who we are and how we see the work.

We believe that: 

Community is built on values made intentional: care that looks out for each person, service that shows up day after day, fairness that opens doors, and celebration that gives life meaning.

Community is also strength. When people feel connected and seen, they are healthier and more resilient. Strengthening community means nurturing these ties—not creating something new, but building on what already exists—and helping organizations deepen their relevance and impact.

Culture is how we move between the individual and the collective. It is the art, music, and ritual through which we express ourselves, and the practices and values that shape how we live together.

Every one of us both inherits and shapes culture. By choosing how we show up—what we create, what we honor, what we pass along—we bind our personal stories into something shared. Culture is where self-expression meets common life, and where meaning takes root.

Place is more than a backdrop—it’s the container that holds our lives. It’s the corner café, the park bench, the dance floor, the sidewalk, the dinner table. These aren’t just physical settings, they’re invitations that shape how we move, how we encounter each other, and how we feel about belonging.

Place is also social infrastructure: the homes where our parents will spend their last years, the transit and physical networks that connect us to work, the safe spaces where we can rest and restore. Healthy communities honor both—the shared and the personal, the gathering and the retreat.

When spaces are designed and programmed with intention, care, and fairness, they welcome people in. When they make room for delight—whether through music, ritual, or the simple rhythms of daily life—they remind us why being part of something larger matters.

Place is where connection finds and nurtures culture—or doesn’t. It’s where the sidewalk ballet unfolds, where lives touch, and where belonging becomes real.

Big Creative is our way of continuing this work by supporting others who are strengthening community through culture and place. Because connection isn’t built once—it evolves every day, through the places we share and the culture we create together.
